Miracle in the Tower

“Great moments were born from great opportunity. 9 times out of 10 we wouldn’t beat them…not tonight. Not tonight. Tonight is our night.”

— Herb Brooks

Head Coach, 1980 US Hockey Team & Olympic Gold Medal Champions

Happy Thursday. GAME-DAY BABY!!!!

You have read my emails this week….

Today, will be short & sweet. It’s game-day and I need to get some time to myself before tonight’s big “Comeback Challenge.”

One of my favorite movies of all time (besides all the Rocky movies of course!) is Miracle on Ice. It depicts the incredible and improbable feat of the US Hockey Men’s Hockey Team defeating the daunted Russian hockey team & then Finland to win the gold medal at the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980.

I was just 9-years old during that historical and epic sports moment.

I still remember that when the US beat Russia I was at soccer practice at Lanes Mill Elementary School in Brick, NJ, and all the parents were huddled around their car radios listening in as we practiced. I’ll never forget that.

I remember the sense of PRIDE after the hockey team won. I remember a country being inspired. I remember those young, “rag-tag” amateur players being hailed heroes after their inspiring journey from good college players to Olympic champions.

Tonight, is a great opportunity. That’s all it is. Opportunity.

I remember walking around the STRONG Yard the morning of the “Comeback Challenge” and all the current trainers and trainees were hedging their bets on who was going to win tonight’s challenge.

I had my headphones in. But I didn’t have my music on. I was just listening to them.

I heard “Leyon, Drew, Drew, Leyon, Leyon, Leyon, Drew, Drew, Leyon….”

Not once did I hear “Coach”. That’s what they all called me on the show.

At first, I thought if I were a betting man, I’d probably say the same thing.

And then it started to bug me. It started to light a fire under me. And not before long, I was fuming inside.

I put on my “pre-game” music mix and got ready for whatever the challenge was going to be. No longer was it about Leyon. Or Drew. Or Ky. Or Adam.

It was about me proving to me that I could still hang with these young pups. 9x out of 10 I might lose to them. But not tonight…not tonight..

Time couldn’t come quick enough….

Guys, I hope you are all set to watch STRONG tonight. While I certainly can’t say what happened, I can tell you that I did my best and laid it all on the line…and I think you will be proud of my effort and will to compete.

Let’s see what happens…

Hop over to my Facebook post now and let me know what you think my odds are of pulling this thing out. I would love to hear/see your support and see your predictions on tonight’s outcome.

“See you” tonight.
