What’s Your Moonshot Idea?

It’s better to shoot for the moon and miss, than shoot for the stars and hit.

Get it?

It’s like saying “It’s better to aim high and miss, than to aim low and hit.” #AimHigh

Naveen Jain, an acclaimed entrepreneur and philanthropist, works to solve the world’s biggest challenges through innovation, and he often talks about “Moonshot Ideas.” This extraordinary concept is something he shared at a recent conference I attended and it’s resonated with me ever since.

Something about “Moonshot Ideas” really gets me fired up. Even typing this, I start dreaming BIG when I hear that phrase. It’s like an instant shot of adrenaline to audit your goals, dream BIGGER, and strive for greater heights. And we all can use that, right?

In fact, I believe high achievers like you and me know we need these scary-yet-inspiring ideas to propel us further in life.

Why?

Let’s break down “Moonshot Ideas” and Naveen’s statement that It’s better to shoot for the moon and miss, than shoot for the stars and hit.

Here’s why you gotta shoot for the moon:

When you reach the stars on your journey to the moon you don’t fall short. Instead, your Moonshot Idea drives you to do more, give more, and be more.

You’re not satisfied. The stars simply are never enough for you.

You’re seeking something higher and that Moonshot Idea will keep you motivated, inspired, and focused to — you guessed it — do more, give more, and be more. Seems like a heckuva consolation prize every time you miss the moon.

And if you do achieve that Moonshot Idea, months, years, or decades down the road, there’s always the challenge to find your way back there again. So, you keep on shooting :).

Hey, repeat visits are hard to come by.

In both scenarios, your Moonshot Ideas allow you to experience an extraordinary journey, instead of shooting for the easily attainable and accepting the stars as your destination.

That’s what the average do. And you’re NOT average.

Easy isn’t rewarding. Impossible is.

So, let’s talk about the journey. The journey to the “moon” comes in many forms:

The journey is working towards a dream.

The journey is putting in the extra effort to make magic happen.

The journey is seeking significance and finding success along the way.

The journey is dreaming so big that through trials and tribulations on your trek, you reap rewards regardless of where you “land.”

You must shoot for the moon to reach the rarefied air where legacies are cemented. And it’s that kinda air I’d love to share with you.

So, what’s your Moonshot Idea?

If you don’t have 2-3 Moonshot Ideas, start dreaming NOW. They may feel like light years away, but I assure you, the journey to get there is well worth it. And it starts one step at a time.

Dream big and keep shooting for the moon!

Much love and many moonshots,

Todd
