I recently spent time with a 25- year veteran of the fitness field whom asked for my guidance. He runs a successful business, presents at major conferences, and influences many people.
Not knowing exactly what he needed, he began to tell me about his “successful” career. He really has accomplished a lot.
But then he told me what was missing in his life. And then he said it.
He said. “I want to do something bigger with my life. I just don’t think I am playing at high enough levels. Everything is good but I feel like I can do so much more.”
Wow. Wow. Wow. This is a true story and one that I hear lot. As I coached him through several exercises to help him create clarity on exactly what “doing something bigger” meant, several thoughts came to my mind:
•We ALL must discover our purpose in life. If you are not fulfilling your true purpose, you will never experience complete happiness or harmony.
•Take more risks. When you get to a certain “level” in life, we often stop taking as many risks. Maybe it is because of fear of failure or even fear of success (as in this man’s case). Regardless, we can’t let fear be the reason why we do something or not do something. Believe in what you are destined for, say yes to the opportunities that surround that, and then work your tail off. Relentless pursuit of achieving your true purpose and overcoming any and all adversity that stands in your way will be a major determinant of the success you ultimately attain.
•Journal. The process of writing helps create clarity. Clarity precedes genius and mastery. The simple discipline of writing and journaling can be revolutionary for the clarity you receive. One of my mentors, Wayne Cotton, introduced me to the discipline of planning your life through a “writing” exercise he calls the 90-DAY WONDER. This is a journaling exercise for your personal and professional development created every 3 months. It is one of the more powerful writing exercises I do on a regular basis. To read the specifics of what a 90 Day Wonder is, you can click here.
•Associate with GREAT PEOPLE. Our life and business is built on relationships. We are a product of the books we read, the things we listen to, and the people we associate with. Seek out and find great coaches and mentors, like-minded leaders who are pursuing common goals and passionate about living a world-class life. One of my own coaches once said, “If you want to be a great athlete, train with great athletes; if you want to be a great coach, learn from great coaches; if you want to be a millionaire, hang out with millionaires; if you want to be spiritually strong, hang out with spiritually strong people; who you hang out with and who you learn from strongly influences the person you become.” What great wisdom!
As I provided homework for this gentleman to work through, I thought, this is a topic that ALL trainers need to hear. In order to “do something bigger with your life”, take ACTION on discovering your purpose, take more risks, journal and write, and associate with great people that will help propel you forward.
This is advice we can live by everyday. Keep inspiring the world to greatness and creating IMPACT everyday. Thank you for all you do!
