LAX Training with my son Luke on the TRX Rip Trainer

A couple weeks ago, I shared in my TD Times about my son Luke shooting his lacrosse ball through my neighbor’s window.

And I shared how we handled that “little” mis-fire. It was a great life-lesson.

But I need to tell you a little bit more about the whole story.

You see, Luke asked me a few weeks ago if I could help train him for lacrosse. And this is a big deal.

As a strength & conditioning coach, I know I could help him get stronger, faster, more agile, work on his reaction time, and become a better athlete and lacrosse player.

And as a father, I was even more pumped that he came to me asking for help.

But I have always been real careful NOT to push my kids as their “coach” too much. I’ll coach them when they ask and I will give them some pointers along the way, but I never want to be the overbearing father throwing conditioning drills down their throat so that they end up hating sports or fitness for life.

And now Luke was asking for “additional” help.

The green light was on. Time to work some magic.

For the past year, I have really been studying this lacrosse game. I like it a lot. It involves a ton of running, cutting, strength, power, hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and strategy. It involves a bit of the best of most major sports (and the boys like it because you can hit each other!). Needless to say, it’s a great game.

But I still didn’t know ALL the nuances of how I can best train a lacrosse athlete and speak the language. Or train my son to be the best lacrosse player he could be.

So I called up my good friend and fitness colleague Pete Holman, who is the founder and creator of the TRX Rip Trainer. The Rip Trainer is a tool that has become popular in fitness & sport training in the past year or so.

I knew Pete recently produced a TRX RIP Training DVD specifically for lacrosse and I heard it was awesome. So I got the DVD and learned a ton. And best yet, Pete shows the drills with 3 levels of  athletes (youth, high school, and pro). And the pro in the video is popular MLL player Pete Baum. My son Luke really loved watching Baum do his thing.

Even though I’ve been using the Rip Trainer for a while, I learned several new drills, exercises, and “tricks” from Holman and I’ve been using them with Luke for the last few weeks.

Here is a quick 2 minute highlight tape of Luke & I training together using the RIP Trainer just last week (about our 5th session together).

Here are 5 lessons to get out of this post:

1. If your kid ASKS you train him or her, say YES. Whether you are a trainer or not. It’s such valuable TIME together.

2. If you are a trainer (or even a parent), continue to seek out experts who have niches in certain areas. While mine is still growing in lacrosse and I’m investing a lot of time learning the game right now, Pete Holman is an expert with the RIP Trainer and this is a great tool for any stick & ball sport (lax, hockey, baseball). 3. If you’re a trainer, there is always more to learn. And then some!

4. Even if your son or daughter breaks a window while practicing, SMILE, and know that the cost of a mistake like this far outweighs the cost of them sitting inside on the computer or playing video games.

5. It’s great to see PASSION in kids. Heck, it’s great to see PASSION in anyone, regardless of age. When you find things that you love to do and that move your soul… keep practicing.

Until next time…keep PRACTICING and keep LOVING LIFE. I WILL!
