Manny or Money?

“Manny or Money?”
By Todd Durkin, MA, CSCS

This Saturday, boxing history is going to be made. One way or the other.

Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr.

Will it be one of the best fights of all-time? Time will only tell.
Will it be one of the fights that keeps boxing relevant? The sport of MMA is literally kicking its butt.
Will it be the highest PPV audience in the history of boxing? Without a doubt, YES.

Estimates are that this fight will bring in between 300-400 million dollars in PPV revenue.

Each boxer will stand to make approximately 100 million each. WOW. One fight.

There is no doubt that this fight is taking place 5 years too late.

Manny is 36 years old.
Mayweather is 38 years old.

Manny-Pacquiao-vs-Floyd-Mayweather

I will admit, I am NOT a Floyd Mayweather fan. His flashy, fast lifestyle, documented history of domestic abuse, and cocky attitude are not my style. Yes, he’s undefeated and is one of the best boxers of all time. I can’t deny that. But I hope he loses.

I do like Manny Pacquiao. Seems like a good dude. Serves his native Philippines as a member of the House of Representatives. Seems humble. Hard-working. And gives back a ton to the people of the Philippines.

But the real reason I like Manny Pacquiao is because of his trainer Freddie Roach. I don’t know Freddie. But I want to know Freddie.

Freddie Roach

I saw a special on HBO about the fight that included Freddie.
Freddie has Parkinson’s disease pretty bad. It’s hard to understand his words sometimes.

He used to be a pro boxer who was 40-13 before retiring, and he has been Manny’s trainer now for 14 years.

The HBO special spoke of the respect that Manny has for Freddie. They said Freddie is Manny’s trainer, friend, father-figure, and mentor all-in-one. It is said that whenever Manny does something, he looks at Freddie for approval. There is an obvious mutual respect and admiration.

The deep-seated respect and relationship between an athlete and his/her trainer is often unspoken. With Freddie and Manny, it may be even moreso.

I was watching Freddie train Manny. Much of it was non-verbal; they just “know” each other. There is comfort there. There is strength there. There is admiration there. There is fire there.

And I loved seeing it. I love that feeling.

My friends, I’m pulling for Manny this weekend.

If I was a betting man, my head would say Money.
But my heart says Manny. And I’m following my heart.

I’m going with Manny in a split decision.

WOW is “Manny or MONEY.”

Who you got?

Much love…and lots of respect.
