WOW…this is one of those conversations that is going to stick with you for a LONG time. My guest today is my man Terrell “TC” Chestnut, and his story is nothing short of remarkable. I first met TC about 10 years ago when he was playing for the San Diego Chargers, and while I knew back then there was something special about him, I didn’t know the full depth of his story. Today, you’re going to hear it.
Terrell grew up in Philadelphia as one of seven kids. By five years old, he was in foster care. He experienced instability, poverty, loss, abuse, trauma, and circumstances that no child should ever have to endure. But somewhere along the way, football entered his life. What started with a pair of soccer cleats from Kmart eventually led to 30–40 college scholarship offers, West Virginia University, and ultimately an opportunity in the NFL.
But this episode is NOT just about football. It’s about what happens when the game ends. It’s about what happens when the identity you’ve carried gets stripped away, the pain you’ve buried comes back to the surface, and you’re forced to decide who you’re going to become next.
Terrell gets incredibly vulnerable in this conversation about his childhood, losing two brothers, the death of his grandmother, surviving sexual abuse, walking through grief and depression, going to therapy, becoming a father, learning to forgive, and ultimately moving from a victim mentality to a survivor mentality.
And one of the things he said that absolutely HIT me was this: “It stops with me.”
The abuse. The neglect. The abandonment. The generational cycles. TC made a decision that his kids would grow up differently than he did. Fatherhood gave him purpose again, and today he is committed to becoming the best version of himself so he can lay a stronger foundation for the next generation.
My friends, this episode is about THE REBUILD. Because whether you’re rebuilding after trauma, loss, disappointment, the end of a career, a broken relationship, a difficult season, or simply trying to figure out what’s NEXT in your life…there is something in this conversation for YOU. In this episode, you’ll hear:
- How Terrell describes his childhood in three words: unstable, resilient, and transformative
- His experience entering foster care at only five years old and how those early years shaped him
- Losing his brother at a young age and the impact his grandmother had on changing the trajectory of his life
- How football gave TC an outlet, a community, and eventually a pathway to West Virginia University and the NFL
- Why having “potential” means nothing unless you’re willing to do the work to bring it out
- The setbacks, surgeries, injuries, and adversity that nearly derailed his football career
- What happened emotionally when football ended and TC had to rediscover his identity and purpose
- TC’s powerful story of surviving childhood sexual abuse and why he didn’t begin truly processing that trauma until adulthood
- How therapy helped him confront suppressed pain, heal his inner child, and begin giving himself grace
- The difference between living as a victim and choosing to become a survivor
- Why becoming a father to Dallas and Amara completely changed TC’s life and gave him a renewed sense of purpose
- The responsibility TC feels to break generational cycles and why he says, “It stops with me.”
- Why forgiveness is ultimately for YOU—not the other person
- How success can become lonely and heavy when your identity and responsibility become tied to achievement
- The difficult transition athletes can face when the game ends and the identity others placed on them disappears
- Why purpose often comes from representing something much bigger than yourself
- TC’s philosophy that you don’t find where you belong—you build it
- Why becoming unapologetically yourself is one of the keys to creating genuine relationships and community
- What five-year-old Terrell would say to the man he has become today
- Why TC believes his next chapter includes speaking, coaching, leading, and helping others transform their mindset
- The meaning behind “The Rebuild” and why all of us, in some way, are continually rebuilding our lives
There are going to be people listening today who see themselves in TC’s story. Maybe you’ve lost someone you love. Maybe you’ve experienced trauma. Maybe an old identity has been stripped away. Maybe you’re carrying anger or resentment that you know you need to release. Or maybe you’re simply in a season where you’re asking, “Who am I now…and what’s next?”
Remember this: your story is not over.
You can rebuild. You can heal. You can forgive. You can break cycles that have existed in your family for generations. And you can take the pain, adversity, setbacks, and scars of your past and use them to create something powerful in the future.
Sometimes we spend so much time trying to go faster in life that we keep adding more and more to the accelerator. But maybe the answer isn’t pushing harder. Maybe it’s figuring out what’s keeping your foot on the brake…and finally LETTING IT GO.
Terrell, thank you for your courage, vulnerability, and willingness to share your story. I believe the best is still ahead for you, brother, and I can’t wait to see you rocking stages, changing lives, and creating massive IMPACT.
