I heard my Dad’s voice…

Today would have been my Dad’s 83rd birthday (Feb 6th).

Unfortunately, my father died of a heart attack when he was only 58 years old.

Over the weekend, I was cleaning out my garage and came across some old VHS tapes (who remembers these?) from my high school football glory days. I haven’t watched them in almost 30 years.

So what did I do this weekend before watching that epic Super Bowl?

You bet, I put in a few of the tapes into an old VCR machine (yep, still have one of those also!) and sat down and watched some of the most enjoyable times of my life.

Additionally, I finally had the opportunity to prove to my 3 kids that Dad actually once had some speed…and some skills. ☺

They have heard the stories before but I don’t think they quite believed ½ of what I was telling them. ☺ ☺

All together, I probably watched 2-3 hours of footage this weekend.

And you know what the best part was?

No, not the “highlight tape” or the many wins we reeled off.

The best part was hearing my Dad’s voice again. He commentated each of the games on his big Panasonic handheld video camera and game play-by-play analysis.

And to hear his voice, commentary, humor, and wisdom got me all emotional.

In the past on his birthday, I would go to a card store every year on Feb 6th and read the many “Happy Birthday cards.” We used to do that together when I was a young boy and I didn’t have the money to buy the card.

But this year, in lieu of going to a card store, I’m going to watch another tape tonightand enjoy my Dad’s commentary and voice one more time.

Folks, it’s amazing how someone’s VOICE can evoke such emotions. Listen to people today and really hear their voice. Someday, it will be even more special than it is today.

Much love,
Todd

P.S. I heard that you can VHS tapes transferred onto CD’s now and bring things up to the modern era. Looks like I’ll have to do that and make Feb 6th an annual tradition to step back in time, watch some of the old glory days, and listen to my Dad’s voice!
