Mentor Lesson #4: Live your life BACKWARDS

Some people’s writing moves your spirit. Some people’s presentations or talks inspire you to be better. Some people’s words just resonate deeply with you.

Robin Sharma is one of those guys to me.

I was first introduced to his work when I read his book, “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.” Great book.

And then I read the “Greatness Guide.” I loved that book also and I still go back and re-read it today.

And then I read his “Leader without a Title.” Great book on leadership for all people, regardless of your role or title at work.

I’ve been in his Mastermind Group. I’ve attended his live meetings. I watch his videos. I try to soak in all the great content he puts out. And I try to immerse myself in as many programs that he has because they make me better.

And out of all the lessons and inspiration I have received from Robin, perhaps the most significant one is this:

“The most successful people live their life backwards.

What does that mean?

It means exactly that. It means that if you know where you want to go, then you have to create a specific strategy on how to get there. A deep, specific strategy on how to exactly do this.
And there are 2 ways to specifically start accomplishing this:

1. Create a personal DECREE statement. I actually included this in my book, “The IMPACT Body Plan.” A decree is a statement about your life that is written as if you were looking back at your life as if you have already created the life you want. You write down what your life looked like. You start the statement with, “I’m so happy and grateful now that…” and you write down all that you want to do with your life (as if it’s already happened). Sounds simple. Extremely profound.

2. Define your BIG 5 for LIFE.These are the 5 things you really want to accomplish in your lifetime. These are the 5 things that if you do them, you will be most happy and fulfilled. You will have left behind maximum IMPACT.

Defining your BIG 5 is very important because it allows you to say “yes” to the things that relate to helping you get to where you want to go. And it also allows you to say “no” to the things you don’t want. This is called being a “strategist” instead of being an “opportunist.” And this is REALLY important for you to be most productive and IMPACTFUL.

ACTION STEP:

1. Write down your BIG 5 for LIFE. It might take 20 minutes. It might take you an hour. Or it might take you a few weeks to really crystallize it. But once you define this, you will have so much more clarity on your direction. And this will help you create freedom and energy to focus your time on what you do want versus spending time, money, and energy on what you don’t want.

2. Write your decree. Start with writing/typing the statement, “I am so happy and grateful now that…” and just start to write as if it’s 10 years from now. Or 25 years from now. Or 50 years from now. This is when you really DREAM. And dream BIG. And you write down all the things you want to see happen in your life. Business. Relationships. Family. Adventure. Career. Financial. Physical health. Spiritual strength. And your LEGACY.

These 2 exercises should energize you. They should fire you up. They should excite you to have the clarity to put your time and energy on the things you most want out of your life.

Most people will read this exercise and DO NOTHING. The upper 10% will actually DO SOMETHING and carry through on the exercises. Only you can make that choice.
