Top Tips to Write a Best-Selling Book | IMPACT Q&A

Good morning fire-breathing dragons. I hope you’re fired-up today and ready for a great episode. I’m really loving the Q&A and today’s question is pure gold. Tiffany Gustafson, (Business Name) asks “What lessons, insights, and processes have you learned in each of the books you’ve written?” I don’t hold back in this episode as I share what worked, what didn’t work, and many lessons learned while writing The IMPACT Body Plan, The WOW BOOK, and my next book coming out in 2020. Additionally, I called up my friends Kelli Watson & Greg Justice, from Scriptor Publishing Group, to share their advice on how to turn your self-published book into a best-seller. This is a MUST LISTEN for anyone who wants to maximize their IMPACT by writing a book.

2:08 – Where there is a will, there’s a way 
There are more ways to get it done nowadays than there were back then in 2010. You don’t have to go through a traditional publisher nowadays; there are ways to independently publish books also. Find what is the best fit for you. 

3:28 – Creating an outline
What are your titles, what are your categories, what are you wanting to cover? The more time you spend framing it up the easier it is to write. Spend a couple of days solely on this.

4:18 – Get Butt-Glue
Attach a story to each subchapter. What are the ones you are going to tell? People remember stories. Use your real experiences, and the ones people will remember.

5:08 – Figure out if you are writing it or are you going to hire a collaborator
With a collaborator, there are extra expenses. Don’t expect them to do the work for you it’s important to actually collaborate! They need to have your voice and get the stories right otherwise it’s not really your book. 

6:25 – Writing the book is only 50% of the game, you have to market the book!
Build your platform now before the book comes out. If you are wanting a big publisher to publish you then you need to prove to them that you have enough people who follow you and seek the information you provide to turn into book purchases.

8:40 – Utilize Launch Teams
Reach out to your loyal followers! It’s a great way to have help driving awareness of the book. Remember pre-sales count as launch day sales, they will help you become a best seller. 

10:59 – It is a Lifetime Thing
Make your book great! It is a legacy, make them last. The book will be around for a long time after you are gone.

Give yourself a deadline but enough time to get it right, structure your time to know when you will write

  • Think about your writing environment. Writing is intuitive, find an environment that will allow you to relax, open up and allow the ideas to come. 
  • Self-editing is like braking the car, let the ideas flow before the editing happens.
  • Have clarity about what you want  the book about and who it will serve (the purpose and your audience)
  • The why behind the book is important, find your why
  • Take it one step at a time
